What tools do I actually need to get started?

For crochet, one hook in the right size for your yarn. For knitting, a pair of needles. A tapestry needle for weaving in ends and a pair of scissors round out the basics. If you are just beginning, a beginner kit includes the hook or needles along with yarn and a pattern, so you do not have to buy each piece separately.
